Each year Dolphin Kick look for athletes to help along their journey in Triathlon. This year we have sponsored Yiannis Christodoulou.  36 year-old Yiannis works as a Performance Analyst for the NHS. His owes his love for the sport of Triathlon to the Brownlee Brothers and their 2012 Olympic success.

Yiannis was not a runner or a very strong swimmer. He had joined a running club to get fit. In 2016 his focus led him to represent the British Triathlon Age group (AG) Aquathlon team & he managed to come back with a Bronze medal. That was it, he was hooked, all his hard work had paid off .

Scheduling training was hard, working around daily life commitments. He works on a three to six-week plan with the addition of an easier 4th/7th week.

He starts his training off at his baseline and increases weekly for three weeks. The following three weeks he just maintains his training. Then, for the 7th week, it’s an easier week with less reps and duration of training etc. In peak season he changes his plan to allow for plenty of recovery.

If he is training for triathlons he makes adjustments for the additional discipline: running, cycling and swimming. He also adds 2 strength sessions into a week to help prevent injuries. Each week he will do:

  •   3 – 4 Runs

  •   3 – 4 Swims

  •   4 Bike sessions

  •   2 Strength sessions

He says “If one day you’re struggling to follow your plan, try going out with the time you have, a short session is still better than nothing – but remember rest and recovery is key. “

He has made podium in all the National Aquathlon Championships he has entered and won the last two European Aquathlon Championships in his Age Group. He has 3 x top ten World Championship finishes and captained the GB team in 2017 & 2018 at the European and World Aquathlon Championships.

In 2019 he decided to move his focus to Triathlon. His aim was to reach the ETU European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Malmo. He is waiting to find out if he has a place after a great first season. Yiannis says, “ representing the triathlon team is a dream come true.”

His other goals for 2020 are to try and make the podium at the National Triathlon Championships & at his first ever British Aquathlon Championships.

In Yiannis words, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I believe if you work hard at anything in life and keep at it, you will have a successful 2020.”

Dolphin Kick want to wish you all the luck this year Yiannis and hope that our sponsorship will help you achieve your goals.
